DeepMind AI Weather Forecaster Beats World-Class System

St Germain en Laye, January 21st 2025.

According to recent developments highlighted in the research on GenCast, Google DeepMind’s AI weather forecasting model has shown to provide better forecasts than some leading operational models, including the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ ensemble model (ENS).

GenCast can generate accurate forecasts up to 15 days in advance and does so in a fraction of the time compared to traditional models, which often take hours to provide similar forecasts. The model outperformed ENS in 97% of the measures used to evaluate its probabilistic forecasts, particularly excelling at predicting extreme weather events such as hurricanes and heatwaves.

This indicates that GenCast has the potential to deliver more reliable and faster weather forecasts than established agencies, marking a significant advancement in the field of meteorology driven by machine learning and AI technology.
