Elephant Chatbot DeepSeek in GenAI China Shop

St Germain en Laye, January 27th 2025.

The stocks of major American tech companies have plummeted following the sudden emergence of a low-cost chatbot, DeepSeek, developed by a Chinese AI company. Launched recently, this application has become the most downloaded in the United States, surpassing its rivals, including ChatGPT. Nvidia’s shares fell by 10%, and those of Microsoft and Meta also dropped.

DeepSeek was developed for less than $6 million, raising concerns about American dominance in the AI field. The chatbot uses an open-source model, which has been criticized by some experts. American restrictions on the sale of advanced chip technologies to China have pushed Chinese developers to innovate, leading to AI models requiring less computing power.

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, who collected banned Nvidia chips to create his model. Liang recently expressed his surprise regarding the sensitivity of the prices related to his product.
