What Is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)?

St Germain en Laye, September 24th 2024.

This is the new concept of Artificial Intelligence described for the first time in 2007. Of course, as usual for some analysts, this AGI could surpass human intelligence, like generative intelligence and AI at all. The principle would be that these systems could have a kind of understanding and control of themselves, or a conscience, with the capacity to modify their code without human intervention.

In 2001: A Space Odyssey, we understood that HAL 9000, the AI of the Discovery One ship, had a sort of birth, then a laborious apprenticeship like a child, to bring it to a level of cognition equivalent to, or even superior to, human members of the crew. Finally, HAL 9000 having its own assessment of the mission to be accomplished, comes into conflict with the astronauts and kills the most of them.

Another aspect of Stanley Kubrick’s film sets that human intelligence involves the duality of good and evil for reasons of survival at all costs, power and control. This intelligence transposed to machines could lead to the same consequences.

Azimov initially solves this problem with his three laws of robotics. But later, some robots amend these simple laws to place the safety of humanity before that of the individual.

This reminds us of the questions posed by AIs controlling autonomous vehicles. In extreme cases, will they choose to hit the group of little girls? The senior couple? Or will they drive into a wall, endangering the vehicle’s passenger(s)?

Nexyad’s AI, SafetyNex, is based on the knowledge of road safety experts, professional drivers, traffic police, and insurers. It is designed to help robotized driving systems according to the context they encounter, for safety of their passengers and that of other road users. SafetyNex analyzes prudent driving according to the road context 20 times per second and reduces speed as soon as prudence decreases, to always respect the traffic rules code and safe driving recommendations. The mission of our AI is to save lives and it anticipates risky situations so as not to have to make value judgment choices.
